Traditionally, and as in most professional sectors, women have been relegated to the background in the music industry. However, the presence of women in recent years has experienced a notable increase in the different professional areas that make up this sector, from musical artists to specialists in sound production.
This advance is also evident in the increase in women who seek to train in musical production. That is why this reality is also reflected in us, EUMES, a school of musical production recognized in Spain and Latin America for the quality and excellence of our higher level formations.
The growing presence of women producers in the music industry
While the music industry continues to have a predominant male presence, the last decade has shown a sustained trend of change due to the hard work of countless women who have been pointing out for years the lack of equity and equal opportunities in the sector.
Among the major musical successes of 2024, the number of female producers, composers and artists has reached record numbers. In the last year, it has been observed that percentage of female producers which appear on the charts has reached 7.2%, marking a historical maximum. Likewise, the participation of composers has risen to 22%, which shows a constant progress. In parallel, female artists already occupy 37% of the main 100 hits of the year, far exceeding the figures of previous cycles.
This boom is also driven by prominent names in musical production such as Emily Lazar, the first woman to win a Grammy in the category of Sound Engineering, Linda Perry, known for producing great hits by artists such as Christina Aguilera and P!nk, or Martineé, producer of Rosalía, whose international career has marked a before and after in modern music.
These figures and examples show that women are revolutionizing the music industry, but in order to consolidate this transformation, it is essential to strengthen the training and professionalization of artists, producers and composers. This objective is one of our main missions in EUMES.
Higher education that promotes equality in the music industry
Education plays a crucial role in empowering women producers. In this context, EUMES is a higher education school in advanced music and sound production whose work contributes to the professionalization of different professionals in the music sector. Our training programmes focus on the use of digital technologies, promoting equity, democratisation and inclusion within this industry.
These tools make visible the talent of artists and producers who, in other circumstances, would not have the means to publicize their work. In this context, we have also contributed to promoting gender equality in the sector through training programs such as the Diploma in Advanced Music and Sound.
This program, pioneer in Spain and with students from all over Latin America, welcomes a growing number of women who aspire to lead the change in the music industry. From sound production and composition to management, these future women producers represent the future of a more inclusive and diverse sector.
References that inspire the women producers of the future
For many women, names such as Bj ark, Missy Elliott and Grimes are references to what is possible to achieve in the music industry as music producers. Its success highlights how creativity, technique and innovation, together with a genuine personality, can be combined to break down barriers and redefine the music scene.
At EUMES, we are committed to continue inspiring and training the next generation of women producers, sound engineers and artists who will contribute to making music a more equitable and exciting space. If you also dream of being part of this revolution, we invite you to value the different professional paths that our Diploma in Advanced Music and Sound offers you, so that you can turn your dreams into reality.
